Director of Music Ministry

Reports To: Senior Pastor
Position Type: Part-time (8-10 hours/week, 4 Sundays off/year)
Salary Range: $8,000 - $10,000/yr (depending on experience)
Start Date: July or August 2025

Summary:
UMC of Johnstown is seeking a passionate and dedicated Director of Music to lead and inspire the congregation through meaningful and engaging musical experiences. The Director of Music will be responsible for overseeing the church's music ministry, fostering a vibrant and inclusive environment for musical participation, and ensuring that music enhances our weekly worship and special services. This role requires strong leadership, organizational, and musical skills, as well as an understanding of and appreciation for Christian worship. The Director of Music will work closely with the Pastor and other church staff to create cohesive and spiritually-enriching worship experiences.

Responsibilities (Regular, Weekly/Monthly):
  • Choir Leadership:
    • Plan, coordinate, and conduct choir rehearsals, fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment for singers of varying abilities.
    • Select appropriate choral music that aligns with the weekly worship themes and enhances the liturgical calendar.
    • Direct the choir in monthly performances during Sunday worship services, ensuring high-quality musical presentations.
    • Recruit and encourage participation in the choir.
  • Sunday Worship Music Coordination:
    • Work with office staff to schedule and coordinate special music for Sunday worship services, including soloists, instrumentalists, and small ensembles.
    • Work collaboratively with guest musicians and ensure their contributions seamlessly integrate into the worship service.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Oversee the Bell Choir Director, providing guidance, support, and ensuring alignment with the overall music ministry goals.
    • Oversee the Organist/Accompanist, coordinating their responsibilities for weekly worship and special events.

Responsibilities (Occasional, Quarterly/Annual):
  • Worship Planning Collaboration:
    • Actively participate in meetings with the Pastor to discuss worship themes, scripture readings, and sermon topics.
    • Contribute to the selection of hymns and congregational songs that are theologically sound, musically appropriate, and engaging for the congregation.
    • Ensure that all musical selections align with the overall message and flow of the worship service.
  • Developing New Music Opportunities:
    • Assess the musical gifts, interests, and talents within the congregation.
    • Identify and cultivate opportunities for new musical expressions and groups (e.g., contemporary worship band, children's choir, instrumental ensembles).
    • Foster a culture of musical creativity and participation within the church.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain the music library, ensuring organization and accessibility of musical resources.
    • Manage the music ministry budget effectively.
    • Arrange for necessary instrument maintenance and repairs.
    • Communicate effectively with the congregation regarding music ministry events and opportunities.
    • Maintain and update church CCLI licence. 

Qualifications:
  • Some formal education in Music or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in directing choirs and leading congregational singing.
  • Strong knowledge of vocal and instrumental music.
  • Proficiency in playing piano or organ.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate musicians of varying skill levels.

Nursery Worker (Sundays, Starting August 2025)

Seeking a part-time Nursery Worker for UMC Johnstown. They will be responsible for nursery care during Sunday morning service and typically be paired with a youth volunteer.

Job Duties:  
  • Primary staff for nursery area Sunday mornings (9-11am) for Sunday morning worship.
  • Care for children ages 0-3.
  • Help coordinate Youth Volunteers with other church staff.
  • Make recommendations to improve nursery area.

Requirements & Salary
  • Ability to pass background check
  • CPR & First Aid certified or willingness to get certified
  • 16+ years of age
  • Previous experience a plus

Pay: $35 per Sunday (Up to 2 hours)
Reports to: Kariann Bandy, Children's Ministry Director.
