Pauses for Lent Day 30
Pauses for Lent by Trevor Hudson
Day 30 Word: MONEY
Scripture: “You cannot serve both God and money.” Matthew 6:24
Money is a touchy subject. Even though it plays a massive part in our personal and social lives, we find it difficult to talk openly about how our faith relates to our money. Indeed, many of us find ourselves stuck in secret and hidden financial obsessions.
In contract to our reticence and reserve, Jesus talks openly about money and possessions. His message conveys two sides: He strongly warns against the spiritual dangers of making money our god, and he also makes it clear that a wise use of our material possessions can enhance our relationship to God.
Jesus challenges us to dethrone money as a rival god. Martin Luther once observed, “There are three conversions necessary: the conversion of the heart, mind, and the purse.” Of these three, the last conversion proves the most difficult.
Comment from Marie: Today’s post has me asking questions. Why it is so difficult to convert our purse, to dethrone money, in such a way that our relationship with God is enhanced? And, what does the author mean that many find themselves stuck in secret and hidden financial obsessions? While I do have questions, I know I must trust that God will provide and I am to give joyfully. Please share your answers to the questions I have posed and your thoughts on today’s word.

This is true for me. I struggle to not give so much importance to money or material things, but sometimes I buy things to make me happy. Although, giving to others makes me very happy also. Looking for balance and asking God for wisdom.
