The Backyard
In Ecclesiastes 3:9–15, the Teacher reminds us that life moves in seasons, yet God stands outside of time. We’re invited to enjoy God’s gifts—“to eat and drink and take pleasure in all [our] toil”—while standing in awe of the One whose work “endures forever.”
“God set eternity in our hearts so we’d learn to walk more slowly, not anxiously.”
In a world that tells us to hustle, Scripture teaches us to saunter—to move through each season with reverence, attention, and joy.

This Week's Message
Key Points:
- Seasons & Sovereignty: Life changes; God does not. His work endures when ours fades (Eccl. 3:11,14; Heb. 13:8).
- Joy in the Ordinary: Receiving daily gifts with gratitude is worship (Eccl. 3:12–13; 1 Tim. 6:17b).
- Eternity in Our Hearts: We sense a larger story, even when we can’t “find out” all God has done (Eccl. 3:11; Rom. 11:33).
- From Hustle to Holy Awe: Don’t just hike to the goal; saunter with God—unhurried, attentive, prayerful (Ps. 23:1–3; Ps. 19:1–4).
5-Day Devotional
Day 1: Receive Today as Gift
Scripture: “It is God’s gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil.” (Ecclesiastes 3:13)
Reflection: Contentment grows when we treat simple things—meals, conversations, work—as grace, not entitlement.
Action Step: Before your first task, name three ordinary gifts you will receive with gratitude today.
Prayer Prompt: Giver of every good gift, teach me to enjoy what You place in my hands today.
Day 2: Seasons Change—God Remains
Scripture: “Whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added… nor taken from it.” (Ecclesiastes 3:14)
Reflection: Plans shift and roles change, but God’s steady love anchors us.
Action Step: Identify one change you’re facing. Write how God’s unchanging character meets you there (faithful, wise, near).
Prayer Prompt: Eternal God, hold me fast as my season shifts.
Day 3: Eternity in Our Hearts
Scripture: “He has put a sense of past and future into their minds.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
Reflection: That holy ache for “more” is not restlessness to tame but a compass toward God.
Action Step: Spend ten quiet minutes without your phone. Breathe, notice, and ask, “Where do I sense eternity tugging at me?”
Prayer Prompt: Lord, deepen my longing for You and align my days with Your story.
Day 4: Practice a Sacred Saunter
Scripture: “Be still, and know that I am God!” (Psalm 46:10)
Reflection: Hurry hides holiness. A slow, attentive walk can become worship.
Action Step: Take a 10–20 minute walk. Move slowly. Name five signs of God’s beauty (light, color, texture, sound, scent).
Prayer Prompt: Shepherd of my soul, slow my steps so I can see You.
Day 5: Joyful Work, Holy Awe
Scripture: “So that all should stand in awe before him.” (Ecclesiastes 3:14)
Reflection: Work becomes worship when done with gratitude and reverence (Col. 3:23).
Action Step: Offer one task today as a prayer: “For Your glory and others’ good.” Do it unhurried and well.
Prayer Prompt: God, let awe shape my attitude and joy flavor my labor.
