Our Mission
Love God, Neighbor, & SelfThe Mission
At the United Methodist Church of Johnstown our purpose is simple. We are here to inspire and challenge those who are striving to live out the most important commandment: to love God, love your neighbor, and love yourself. We provide a place where all are welcome to connect and belong. Nobody stays a stranger long with us. Many of those who choose to be part of our community are making a difference every day through their work, family, and community activities. We strive to fill them up so they can continue to bless our community.
No matter where you are right now, what you believe (or don’t believe) about God, or where you have been you are welcome to find a place with us. We believe that God values everybody no matter what. We also believe God loves us too much to leave us exactly as we are. We all have our issues and things to work through. In our community we think the best way to do that is together.
In life we all learn at some point that we can’t do everything. Here, we think the correct response to that is to also realize but each of us can do something.
Join us, find a place to belong, and find your something.
Discipleship: Living Out Our Faith Together
At the United Methodist Church of Johnstown, we believe that discipleship is more than a program—it’s a way of life. Being a disciple means learning to follow Jesus more closely, day by day, in both our personal walk and our shared community life. Discipleship is how we grow in faith, love more deeply, and live out the transforming grace of God.
We are committed to becoming disciples not just in our church, but through our church—supporting one another as a congregation, and extending that same spirit of love, learning, and service into our neighborhoods and beyond. Discipleship is not a checklist; it’s a rhythm of life centered on six essential practices: Pray, Worship, Serve, Share/Invite, Commune, and Inquire.
Below, you’ll find what each of these practices means to us—and how they shape our mission of becoming disciples who make disciples.
Pray
This involves actively engaging with God's grace through confession, seeking forgiveness, and intentionally cooperating with the Holy Spirit. This component focuses on fostering an awareness of God's presence and surrendering to His work in your life.
Worship
This includes participating in corporate worship services such as Sunday liturgy and practicing personal devotions like prayer and meditating on scripture. These activities deepen your personal relationship with God.
Serve
This means living out your love for others by practicing compassion and justice. Activities include serving those in need, advocating for social justice, and giving generously of your time and resources to help others.
Share/Invite
This is the act of sharing the gospel and your personal faith journey with others. It involves inviting people to church or other Christian gatherings and living in a way that demonstrates the transformative power of Christ.
Commune
This component focuses on building a supportive community for spiritual growth and accountability. It involves joining small groups like Bible studies or prayer groups where you can encourage and hold one another accountable.
Inquire
This goes beyond simply reading the Bible to actively studying and applying God's word. Activities include participating in structured Bible studies, engaging in theological reflection, and seeking to understand how biblical truths apply to your daily life.
