Lent is a season set aside for self-examination and penitence in order to be purified for the joyous celebration of Easter. People talk about “giving up something for Lent” as they try and enter into the spirit of the season, but while such activities are better than nothing, simply not eating chocolate (or whatever) for the forty days of Lent does not really reflect the spiritual depth that Lent was intended for. We invite you to come and explore that spiritual depth in community at The United Methodist Church of Johnstown. Intentional examination of one’s spirit and how it is playing out in life might lead to discomfort and change (is there any change that isn’t uncomfortable?), but the end result reflects the Easter message of transformation and a new life in harmony with Christ. If substituting prayer, fasting meditation, Bible study and worship for chocolate for forty days brings you closer to God, I would have to say it is well worth it.
