‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’

Matthew 22:36-40

One of my biggest struggles in life has been to follow these 2 commands from our passage in Matthew about loving God and loving your neighbor on a daily basis.  How do I love God when bad things occur, love those that I disagree with, love those that are communicating a different message than love, and love myself for not messaging hope with love today?

What has helped me in addressing this struggle is our churches message of Love God, Love your Neighbor, Love yourself.  Keeping this phrase in mind has simplified my remembering to love at all times and understand how to follow these cornerstone commands. There is a need for all three, not just one or two, but all three to really follow this greatest commandment.

By following this simple message and applying it allows us to live our faith and follow Jesus’ teachings. Love can take many different forms, depending on what is needed at that moment.  It may take the form of silence and listening, a hug, a kind word, or a helping hand, depending on the needed response, but all equals love.

A simple daily ask is, Jesus be present in our lives today to show us how to love God, our neighbor and ourselves when we struggle to follow these commands.
