Stepping Out

In Matthew 14:22–33, we find Peter and the disciples caught in a storm, battling rough waters and confusion. But it is in this chaos that something unexpected happens—Jesus walks on water. And even more surprisingly, Peter asks to join Him.
“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” (Matthew 14:28)
Peter’s step out of the boat wasn’t just an act of bravery; it was an act of faith. He moved past what seemed impossible because he trusted that Jesus could make the impossible possible. Like Peter, we are called to step beyond our perceived limitations and into moments where faith is required more than certainty.

Table of Contents

Key Points:

  1. Faith Requires Movement – Peter stepped out before he had a guarantee. We must be willing to act in faith, not just think about it.

  2. Fear is Part of the Journey – Peter doubted and began to sink, but Jesus still reached for him. Doubt doesn't disqualify us; it humanizes us.

  3. God Expands What We Believe is Possible – What looks like failure may actually be transformation. God meets us in the “trying.”

5-Day Devotional

Day 1: Take the First Step
Scripture Reference: Matthew 14:29 "So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus."
What "boat" are you clinging to because it feels safe? What step might God be calling you to take?

Action Step: Identify one area where you’ve been hesitant to step out in faith. Take one small action toward it today.

Prayer Prompt: Lord, give me the courage to step out, even when I’m afraid.
Day 2: The Wind is Real
Scripture Reference: Matthew 14:30 "But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened..."
Fear isn’t failure. What winds in your life are distracting you from God's presence?

Action Step: Write down your biggest fear right now. Offer it to God in prayer.

Prayer Prompt: Jesus, help me focus on You instead of the storms around me.
Day 3: Keep Your Eyes on Jesus
Scripture Reference: Hebrews 12:2 "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith..."
Where is your focus today—on the waves or on the One who walks above them?

Action Step: Take a 5-minute pause today to center your heart in silence and focus on Christ.

Prayer Prompt: God, help me turn my eyes from fear to faith.
Day 4: You’re Not Alone
Scripture Reference: Matthew 14:31 "Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him."
Even when we doubt, Jesus is there. What would it mean to believe that He won’t let you fall?

Action Step: Reach out to someone today who may be struggling. Be a hand of support.

Prayer Prompt: Lord, thank You for catching me when I fall.
Day 5: What’s Actually Possible?
Scripture Reference: Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
What if the thing you thought you couldn’t do is the thing God is calling you to?

Action Step: Reflect on one time God helped you do something you thought was impossible.

Prayer Prompt: Jesus, help me believe that with You, more is possible than I think.
