This Week: July 20-27

The Unlikely Disciple

When Jesus called his first disciples, he didn’t visit synagogues or search among religious scholars. He walked along the Sea of Galilee and called out to fishermen—people overlooked by society, bound by routine, and constrained by expectation. And they followed him.
“Jesus saw something in them that they didn’t yet see in themselves.”
Fishermen knew how to endure, work hard, collaborate, and face unpredictability—skills Jesus knew would be essential in the days ahead. Their calling—and ours—isn’t about being ready or qualified. It’s about saying yes. God sees more in us than we often see in ourselves. The call isn’t reserved for the exceptional. It’s for the willing.

Table of Contents

Key Points:

  1. God Calls the Unlikely – Jesus didn’t pick religious elites. He called ordinary workers with extraordinary potential.

  2. Discipleship Begins with Yes – The first step wasn’t theological training. It was trust and obedience.

  3. You Are Equipped in Ways You Don’t See – Like fishermen, we’ve already been shaped by life in ways that prepare us to follow Jesus.

5-Day Devotional

Day 1: God Sees What You Don’t
Scripture Reference: Matthew 4:19 “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.”
Jesus didn’t ask for resumes—just a response. He knew what Peter and Andrew could become, even when they didn’t.

Action Step: Reflect on something you're good at that others may not notice. Could it be part of your calling?

Prayer Prompt: Lord, help me trust what You see in me, even when I don’t see it myself.
Day 2: The Power of Immediate Yes
Scripture Reference: Matthew 4:20 “Immediately they left their nets and followed him.”
Obedience doesn’t always wait for perfect conditions. Sometimes the Spirit calls now.

Action Step: What is one small act of obedience you’ve been postponing? Do it today.

Prayer Prompt: Jesus, give me the courage to say yes when You call—right away.
Day 3: Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Purpose
Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 1:27 “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise...”
God delights in using what others dismiss. There’s no such thing as too ordinary for divine purpose.

Action Step: Write down three things about yourself you once considered weaknesses. Ask God to show you how they might actually be strengths.

Prayer Prompt: God, use every part of me—even the parts I’ve overlooked—for Your glory.
Day 4: Equipped Through Experience
Scripture Reference: Romans 5:3–4 “Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character...”
The disciples’ past prepared them for their future. Your hardships might be your training ground.

Action Step: Look back at a difficult season. What did it teach you that might serve someone else now?

Prayer Prompt: Lord, thank You for the lessons hidden in hard seasons. Help me use them to bless others.
Day 5: The Call Still Comes
Scripture Reference: John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you.”
Jesus still calls. Not with a megaphone, but with a whisper in your spirit.

Action Step: Spend five minutes in silence today. Listen for God’s voice. Write down what stirs in your heart.

Prayer Prompt:
Jesus, I’m listening. I am Yours. Lead me where You will.
